The underdog meaning in betting is simple: the underdog is the side the book rates as less likely to win, and its price is higher because of that. Players in the Philippines meet the word on every board, in the winner market and in the handicap column alike. This page shows the three places the odds name the underdog, with made-up prices and neutral labels. To see the whole board first, read how a basketball odds board is laid out.

How decimal odds mark the underdog

In decimal notation the underdog is the side with the larger number. Example, all prices invented:

SideDecimal priceImplied chanceRole
Team A1.4071.4 percentFavourite
Team B3.4029.4 percentUnderdog

The implied chance is 1 divided by the price. The two figures add to 100.8 percent, and the extra 0.8 points are the book’s margin. A 100 stake on Team B returns 340 if it wins, and a 100 stake on Team A returns 140.

How American odds mark the underdog

In American notation the sign does the work. A plus number is the profit on a 100 stake, and a minus number is the stake needed to profit 100.

  1. Team B at plus 240: 100 staked returns 240 profit, 340 total, which is decimal 3.40.
  2. Team A at minus 250: 250 staked returns 100 profit, 350 total, which is decimal 1.40.
  3. Plus means underdog and minus means favourite, in every pairing.

How a handicap makes the underdog visible

On a handicap board the underdog is shown with a plus line, such as Team B plus 5.5. That line is added to Team B’s score before the result is judged, so Team B can lose the game by 5 or fewer and still win the bet. The favourite carries the matching minus line and must win by 6 or more.

Team A, favouriteMinus 5.5Team A wins by 6 or more
Team B, underdogPlus 5.5Team B wins, or loses by 5 or fewer

When there is no underdog, and why the label is not a prediction

If both sides are priced the same, such as 1.91 on each, the market is a pick’em and neither side is the underdog. Prices move, so the label can change before the game starts.

  1. Read the price your bet will be accepted at on the bet slip.
  2. Remember the label describes the price, not the result.
  3. Set a limit before you stake.

A high price does not make a stake safer or smarter. The 21+ rule and limits on the responsible play page lists tools and help lines for players aged 21 and over. The lobby menu has a SPORT item, and the sportsbook’s own rules page covers its formats.

FAQ

What is the underdog meaning in betting?

The underdog is the side the sportsbook rates as less likely to win. Its price is higher, so a winning bet on it returns more per unit staked than one on the favourite.

How do I tell the underdog from the odds?

In decimal odds the underdog has the larger number. In American odds it has the plus sign, and the favourite has the minus sign.

Does the underdog get points on a handicap?

Yes. The underdog is shown with a plus line and gets that many points added before the result is judged. The favourite is shown with the matching minus line.

Ibig sabihin ba ng underdog ay mananalo ang mas mahina?

No. The label only says what the book's price implies. A higher price pays more when it wins and wins less often by the book's own rating.
